The Peljesac Peninsula,
a strip of land extending 70 km into the Adriatic, lies a half hour
drive north of Dubrovnik city. The road meanders along the coast with
spectacular island views before the turn off to Orebic and Korcula.
After the historic towns of Ston and Mali Ston, with their impressive
ancient fortifications and famous saltpans, oyster and mussel beds,
the road continues through a dramatic, ever-changing landscape of rocky
outcrops, heaths and pinewood. It touches the north coast at Drace and
then plunges through the grape growing areas of Potomje where the famous
local wines Dingac and Postup are produced. Further on, to the left,
is the pretty bay and village of Trstenik from where it is possible
to catch the ferry to the wonderful forested island of Miljet. Finally, the road winds down around the last mountain outcrops and there are the first views of the island of Korcula and the town of Orebic, made famous by its tradition as the final dwelling place for generations of sea captains who built magnificent villas on the waterfront. |
